We Are: Josephine Nwokedi, MD, MBA

Josephine Nwokedi, MD, MBA is a general surgery resident at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Patient-Reported Outcomes, Value, and Experience (PROVE) Center. She is also an NIH T32-funded Pediatric Surgeon-Scientist Training Program Fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she applies cutting-edge genetic technologies to study vascular anomalies and refine disease mechanisms.

Josephine earned her medical degree and Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California, where she combined her clinical training with a focus on healthcare operations, surgical outcomes, and mitigating health disparities in underserved populations. Her early work ranged from improving global health operations in Brasília, Brazil, to studying trauma outcomes in the East Los Angeles’ Hispanic community. These experiences shaped her commitment to improving access to equitable surgical care.

Her research interests lie at the intersection of innovation, clinical outcomes research, and patient-centered care. She is passionate about using novel technologies and data-driven approaches to refine surgical decision-making, improve diagnosis, and optimize patient outcomes and quality of life.

A Los Angeles native and first-generation African American, Josephine enjoys kickboxing, traveling internationally, trying new cuisines, watching films—she even took a class in cinematography to better appreciate the craft.
